Clubs & Committees

A large part of what the LSA does is oversee the numerous student organizations here at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law. There are a tremendous amount of clubs and committees at work at U of A Law, and you can quite easily find one that you are passionate about.

Below you’ll find a little information on most of the clubs and the contact information for their head representatives for the year.

Alberta Law Review

 

The Alberta Law Review is a student-run academic journal founded in 1955. Issued by the Alberta Law Review Society, the organization consists of second and third-year law students at the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary. Published quarterly, the journal has approximately 1,000 pages per volume.

Student Articling Committee

 

The Student Articling Committee is comprised of 12 elected students (four from each year of study). The committee works closely with Career Services to offer students several events that provide networking opportunities. Some events are also intended to help students refine the skills necessary to find a summer placement and/or article.

Canadian Bar Association

 

The law student section of the Canadian Bar Association’s Alberta Branch organizes a number of activities throughout the year, including guest speakers, visits to the courts and a mentor program which introduces students to members of the practicing bar in Edmonton.

Canons of Construction

 

The Canons of Construction newspaper is published by the Faculty of Law students. Its mandate is to inform and entertain the university legal community. We print monthly issues providing information about all aspects of the legal community, as well as a variety of other topics, including politics, pop culture, news, and sports.

Christian Legal Fellowship

 

The Christian Law Students’ Association is a group that aims to foster Christian community, help students grow in their faith and provide a welcoming environment for the exploration of faith issues arising from the study of law.

Energy Law Club & AIPN

 

The Energy Law Club aims to increase awareness and knowledge of energy issues in Canada through guest speakers and student trips.

Environmental Law Students’ Association

 

ELSA has three main goals: 1) to promote sustainability within the Faculty of Law; 2) to introduce students to the possibility of pursuing a career in environmental law and/or provide resources for students already considering a career in environmental law; and 3) to raise student awareness of contemporary environmental causes and issues.

Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (FACL)

 

The Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers aims to promote equity, justice, and opportunities for Asian Canadian legal professionals, students and the community, as well as those with an interest in working with the Asian Canadian community.

Francophone Law Students Association (Association des étudiants en droit francophones)

 

L’Association des étudiants en droit francophones (L’AEDF) est une association qui vise à développer des liens entre la Faculté de droit à l’Université de l’Alberta et la communauté francophone de l’Alberta.

The Francophone Law Students Association is an organization that seeks to develop ties between the University of Alberta Faculty of Law and the francophone community of Alberta.

Golden Bearristers & Panda Bearristers Rugby Clubs

 

UAlberta Law’s men’s and women’s rugby teams play in and around Edmonton, including an annual match with alumni teams and a tournament with western Canadian law schools.

Indigenous Law Students’ Association (ILSA)

 

The Indigenous Law Students’ Association is a student group within the Faculty of Law that is devoted to raising awareness of current Indigenous legal issues within Canada and internationally.

Law & Business Association

 

The Law and Business Association exists to connect students to the business of law. Events bring together professionals in the field who can shed light on business-focused topics such as firm hiring cycles, in-house counsel positions, the law firm as a business and the use of technology in the practice of law. The club hosts panel discussions that provide opportunities for students to meet members of the legal community, and since 2017/18, has co-organized the Faculty’s Legal Innovation Conference with the Office of the Dean.

Law Climbing Club

 

The Law Climbing Club meets twice weekly (as schedules allow) to climb at the University climbing gym. It’s free for U of A students, and all skill levels are invited to participate.

Law and Older seeks to encourage and edify older law students through education, social activities and mutual support.

Law Hockey Clubs

 

The Litigators, Tortfeasors, and Swift Justice meet every week at Clare Drake Arena for non-contact hockey. Law students of all skill levels are invited to participate throughout the school year.

 

Law Show

 

The Law Show is an annual musical variety show organized by law students. The purpose of the law show is to take a humorous look at the law school experience and the legal profession in general. It provides an opportunity for students to showcase their considerable acting, dancing, musical and vocal talent. All net proceeds raised are donated to a local charitable organization.

Mental Health and Wellness Committee (MHWC)

 

The Mental Health and Wellness Committee is a student organization committed to helping students manage the stress and pressures of law school by promoting healthy habits, student support and stress-reducing events. The committee provides information, support and leadership to improve the physical and mental well-being of students.

 

OUTlaw Alberta

 

OUTLaw is a student organization dedicated to promoting a positive atmosphere within the Faculty of Law for queer students. OUTLaw organizes social events, develops relationships between the Faculty and students and provides visibility and support for the LGBTQ+ community at UAlberta Law .

Runnymede Society

 

The Runnymede Society is a non-partisan organization dedicated to exploring the rule of law, constitutionalism and individual liberty. We aim to foster intellectual diversity and respectful dialogue and debate on campus about current issues of constitutional law.

Sports and Entertainment Law Society

 

The Sports and Entertainment Law Society seeks to provide students who have an interest in sports or entertainment law with a mechanism to become involved in and acquire a greater knowledge of the issues in these fields. The society sponsors activities and lunch time lectures to familiarize students with this unique type of law.

Student Animal Legal Defence Fund (SALDF)

 

The Student Animal Legal Defense Fund aims to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system. The group provides a forum for fundraising for local animal rights advocacy organizations, facilitates networking within the animal rights community and students, and raises awareness on campus about animal rights issues.

 

Student Legal Services (SLS)

 

Student Legal Services of Edmonton is a student-managed, non-profit society dedicated to helping low-income individuals with access to justice in Greater Edmonton. For the last 45 years, student volunteers from UAlberta Law have provided free legal information and agency in the courts to those who would otherwise be unable to afford these services. Student Legal Services provides assistance in areas of civil, criminal and family law, as well as performscommunity outreach in legal education and research assistance to non-profit organizations.

Women’s Law Forum

 

The Women’s Law Forum is a feminist organization whose purpose is to promote the position of women in society and raise awareness of issues relating to women and the law.
