Who we are

The LSA organizes social events throughout the year, funds and registers student sport teams in the U of A Intramurals, publishes an annual student directory (The Who’s Who), provides lockers and access to the student lounge (The Gavel), and maintains the database of CANs (Condensed Annotated Notes) that are provided to our members. The LSA also represents its members at external events (University or law-related) and speaks on behalf of the student body before the Faculty.

Mia Bottos

President

mbottos@ualberta.ca

Hey folks. My name is Mia Bottos (she/her) and I am delighted to be your Law Students’ Association President! What does this mean for you? It means I lead a wonderful group of people who advocate on your behalf to the Faculty and try to bring you cool things to make being in law school an actually decent time. Sometimes, I’m on my silly little soapbox with my silly little megaphone telling the Faculty that we are a force to be reckoned with, and sometimes I’m frantically searching about whether combination therapy dog and Jamaican beef patty businesses exist locally and if so, do they cater. I’m a wearer of many hats.

Happy to chat any time about all things community organizing, tattoos, BTS, and your experience here as a student. Let me know how I can help you, and we’ll figure it out together. Ideally over an oat milk latte or some risotto. Dealer’s choice.

Suzanne Ross

VP General

seross@ualberta.ca

Hi! I’m Suzanne (she/her) and I am the Vice President General of the LSA! As VP General, my role is to manage elections, assist the president, and run the 1L mentorship program. I am a 2L, and moved to Edmonton from Vancouver. When not doing law things you’ll probably find me hunting for the best cafes, reading fantasy novels, doing sheet masks, or harassing my cat Momo.

Leah Arthur

VP Finance

larthur@ualberta.ca

Hi, I’m Leah (she/her) and I’m your Vice President Finance, aka the resident ‘numbers guy’ for the LSA. I can often be found in the library (likely with socks and sandals and/or a RedBull), or on the field or ice for the Panda Bearristers and Swift Justice!

In my off time, I can be found doing random things to stay active (my newest one is climbing), hanging out with my friends or looking at pictures of other people’s pets (since I have none of my own – sad). I’m always available for questions or to talk about anything law or non-law related!

Gavin Wilkes

LSA/ILSA Representative

gjwilkes@ualberta.ca

My name is Gavin (he/him) and I am a treaty band member of the Liidlii Kue First Nation in Fort Simpson of the NT, on Treaty 11 territory. I am Deh Cho Dene and am excited to be the LSA/ILSA Representative on the LSA for the 2021/2022 academic year.

My undergraduate degree background was in drama and philosophy, where I used the theatre as the medium for Indigenous advocacy and issue awareness through performance, directing, and playwriting.

Previously I was a committee member of the Indigenous Engagement Advisory Committee for a term before my employment departure from the Augustana Faculty, and last academic year I was the first-year representative on the Indigenous Law Students’ Association.

Gabriella Gader

VP Academic

gader@ualberta.ca

Hey everyone! My name is Gabriella (she/her) and I’m your VP Academic, which means I get the extreme honour of compiling the CANs we all depend on as well as organizing the PASS sessions!

When I’m not busy being a law student you can find me running, hiking, snowboarding, trying to sneak plants and online shopping deliveries into my condo without my partner noticing, and finding the best Twilight memes on TikTok.

If you ever have questions about school or just need to complain about property law, I’m your gal!

Colin Macgillivray

VP External

cjmacgil@ualberta.ca

Hey everyone, my name is Colin (he/him) and I am the VP External for the LSA! I manage the website, the LSA’s social media, and generally just cause trouble around the law centre (not in my job description).

Other than being a mischievous little scoundrel, I’m also one of the Executive Directors for Law Show — please join Law Show by the way — which I’m using in hopes of padding my acting reel before I eventually make a lateral move from Edmonton to Hollywood.

When I’m not “going to class,” you can find me trying to earn a Taco Bell sponsorship, challenging Tik Tok stars to professional wrestling matches or making sure I keep my “Best Hair in the Faculty” award which was personally given to me by the Dean. Feel free to reach out if you ever want to run your standup comedy routine by me.

Aaron Moizis

VP Services

amoizis@ualberta.ca

Hi everyone, my name is Aaron (he/him) and I am the 3L VP Services on the LSA.

After 3 years on the LSA I’ve learned to eat pasta with a spoon and no longer cut my spaghetti with a knife. I’ve always promoted study smarter not harder so I will always recommend finding a CAN over doing a reading. If you ever need someone to motivate you to join a club I will probably recommend you start a wine club so I can join it with you.

Emilio Filomeno

VP Services

efilomen@ualberta.ca

Hola! My name is Emilio (he/him) and I have the pleasure of serving as your 2L VP services this year. When I’m not caught up in something LSA related, you can catch me working away with other committees at our Faculty, such as the BLSA, Grad Committee, or the running club—something Kiana, Georgia and I started this term!

I also had the funkiest summer job this year working for the Calgary Zoo. If you see me walking down the hallway feel free to stop me and test my knowledge on any of the animals that may reside at said zoo. Did you know a Malayan Tapir can eat up to 75lbs of food a day? Anyways, like any good law student, I like to think I know more about coffee than I actually do (I also drink black coffee if you’re wondering)…(you’re not).

Y para los que se quedaron preguntando, si. Hablo español y soy Argentino. Chau for now!

Maxine Fine

VP Social

fine@ualberta.ca

Hi everyone! I’m Max (she/her), future JD, current party planner. As your 3L VP Social, my responsibilities include planning events such as Pre-O, First Friday Back, and the Carbolic Smoke Ball. AKA I am here to make sure you have FUN!

Some things you should know about me: I believe astrology is a science, I regularly disappear with bottles of tequila, I can quote Kourtney Kardashian in my sleep, I am scared of developing separation anxiety from my pitbull, I am obsessed with balloons and pastel highlighters, and please, do not ask me to run.

I am always happy to hear your event ideas, and I can’t wait to see everyone at this year’s LSA events!

Georgia Philipp

VP Social

gphilipp@ualberta.ca

Hi everyone, my name is Georgia (she/her) and I am the 2L VP Social this year. I’m a simple girl that loves snacking with her dog and a good craft beer, but what I enjoy even more is snacking with my friends over a drink or two.

I am definitely the lesser half of the VP social duo, but I could run at LEAST one more kilometre than Maxine could. I consider myself outgoing and personable, some people call it annoying and loud.

Come check out an LSA event and judge for yourself!

Barrett Schultz

VP Sports

bgschult@ualberta.ca

My name is Barrett (he/him) and I am one half of the LSA Sports team. Between Kiana and I, our job is to plan and execute a few of the law school’s oldest events, such as the infamous “El Hacko” golf tournament. We also are in charge of signing up students for IM Leagues, which is the university’s intramural sports league.

I spend most of my summer golfing, most of the fall watching football (Go Ravens) and most of the winter/spring watching hockey (Go Flames) and basketball (Go Raptors). If you’d like to talk about any of these things or are just looking for someone to talk to, please reach out! My inbox is ALWAYS open and I would love to help any of you out however I can!

P.S. Come play rugby, we need help defending our title!

Kiana Smith

VP Sports

kfsmith@ualberta.ca

Hi friends! My name is Kiana (she/her) and I’m one of your VP Sports for the year. You can usually catch me running… late for class with a coffee in hand or at a nearby happy hour. I love a good adventure but also watching copious amounts of reality TV.

Feel free to reach out and ask me anything (except for directions because we’re both guaranteed to get lost).

Céleste Kwok

VP EDI

ckwok1@ualberta.ca

Hey, my name is Céleste (she/her) and I'm excited to be the LSA's first VP Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion! My goal is to make law school a safer and more inclusive space.

Beyond school, I love interior design and fashion. You'll often find me watching the Bachelorette/2000s rom coms or playing video games. My current dream is to live in a surf shack in Hawaii - snowboarding is a transferable skill, right? Always down to talk about EDI initiatives (and/or our shared crush on Timothée Chalamet)!

Stephen Raitz

1L Representative

raitz@ualberta.ca

Howdy! I'm Stephen Raitz (he/him) and I am one of your 1L Representatives for 2021-2022. I'm here to amplify your ideas and concerns to ensure we have a good time in our first year of Law School.

I am from Leduc, AB which is very important to my identity. I come to Law School with a background in urban planning and a big spicy passion for community building. When not in the Law Library, you can find me yelling at Edmonton City Council, making Tik Toks, or going for a nice long run. I am one of the many tall, skinny, white guys who is also an improviser. You can find me improvising with Rapid Fire Theatre in Edmonton! My mantra is feel good, look good, do good.
